“Fuego artificial de acero
Qué seductora esta iluminación
Artificio de artificiero
Añadir algún encanto al dolor.”
Guillaume Apollinaire.

“Firework of steel
How seductive this illumination
Artifice of the pyrotechnician
To add some charm to pain.”
Guillaume Apollinaire.
You see the gleam of the steel blades in hand. You see it making its way through the foliage of unspeakable nomenclatures, the artificial fruits. Steel blades on horseback, under a registration without margins, faithful, without levels. You see the steel blades marking their passage: blades adrift in the frozen dew, under the open sky, unhurried and yet fugitive, pursued in a dry and rancid hunt. Steel blades made of water and crusts of bread that became near-sighted hosts, heedless of where they might end, whether the path they open will lead to the blunt crystals of reality, or else, on their knees, to the infinite precipice of the abyss. Eyeless. Machete hordes, candles, like lit candles, cranks, hands of a clock thought to be broken yet found more alive, marking the end of the staffs in this ploughing, the death of the singing cafés that do not sound, of the sparse, well-meaning books, not counting but dissonant, machetes that by sheer chewing, sheer cut, sheer gallop of pollen and placentas, will drink from the well they possessed, will depart by their belonging share, by sheer appearance, their pure inheritance. Burning.
Steel blades to reap obstacles, bring down beams, untangle the tangle of strings. Rows of steel for exchange, from the slope to the clearing, from the deceitful to the wise, to raise flags with other wools, to change the face of the currency of exchange; steel blades of maternal current, of mother’s-milk tongue, steel blades printed on their virginal paper impregnated with acid, revolutionary papers of the designated design, papers more flying than drying, papers landed in their own mechanism, their new and warlike alphabet, their intrinsic role as echo, once self-absorbed and tiresome and now, more than overabundant, redoubled.
Steel blades like manual factories, construction manuals, reflecting deconstructions of rhetorics and ravings, back to the course of their river, the plethoric choreographies of their offspring, to the memory of the vocal cords, bucolic cords of their offspring, steel blades born from the outskirts, the rice fields, the cane fields, the cornfields, now without the weight of their men in the water, now without the rope of their heights in the fire. Hordes of steel in ferryboat and pirogue, steel blades in calash, cart, and wheelbarrow, steel blades that twist the tails of marble swine, make the hours fall, the roof tiles of rickety and vulgar history, dampened gunpowder in the annals of cochineals.
Steel blades that shovel, that peel with blows the crude louts of the forked tongue and their deaf bumblebees; forked steel, stubborn steel, steel like splinters of unwound bones approaching the truth of partridges, opening toward the berry of the truth of the happy, and they pull, they pull like bears at the fence of lies, they pull and pull at the cynical lie of tyranny until they reach the garlic of labor in their hands. New garlic without divisions, sharp cuts of their child-life.
Steel blades that strike like wind chimes, open like Advent calendars that morning after morning have sifted through their own breathlessness, drunk from the hanging heads, eaten from the shreds of their frayed flesh; steel blades perhaps armed, barely, with sorrows and bales of worn ideas, mere tatters, lean strips of meat from books without flesh or kidneys, bland bones, hollowed, porous, surviving the catastrophe of their spilled blood and, even so, already desiccated, dried from within, they pour their healthy sangria over the frozen breath of their dead, their loose dead who, no longer able to be bequeathed like lakes of delight, drops of greedy joy, have remained before their eyes, fixed, like great birds, perhaps macaques petrified in oblivion and their own stupidity. Broken, torn apart.
Steel blades—let no one doubt it—choked with fury, late as it may be but just as realistic, dragged by their ruddy, stubborn, telluric, and manifest desire for a new sowing, a beautiful sowing of lovers and amethysts; steel blades this scrawny, this shrill, reborn as if from the bottom of an almost marine bed, like living eels, vivid, blazing, slipping through the air like salt vapor, puppet saltpeter from the deepest before.
Steel blades sharpened on the grindstone of the full moon, round moon filled and full of hyenas and madness, scorched plain that precedes this, their final birth, free as hares, pound by pound, to free life in a minimal yet hard and pure sanity. Lighthouse steel, feral steel, steel like costly lanterns, saber teeth, proliferating sabers, cones of burning incense, definitive brackets to leonine ointments, false bonds defeated; steel blades in black arms under the grave grievance of their God, steel blades handmade in the braziers of the Sun, through sheer blows of heat in the precarious field of such a God, precisely to divide and distribute that very God, to slice him into the finest particles for strictly personal use, to fell the thalamus, the stem of that same solitary, phantasmal God, for the better use of the body and mind of his people, beloved and still to be armed.
Steel blades, therefore, less for sorcery or clairvoyance, for blind and untamed omen, and more for the long bypassing of locusts and caimans, like a beautiful boiling of crabs and other animals, perfect as the metaphor of an open path. Steel blades like a bundle of the obstinate, kilometer-long bird beaks to establish once and for all the forced dumbbell, the defeat of false rib cages; steel blades like a mass of threads, cutting edges separating shelves of accounting books from real brothels, anointed temples, aquifers, and mangroves.
Steel blades, scourges of false summits, of the loose trap of privileges with all their vomit of potions, cysts, and enzymes. Skyscraper steel, singular signs, free colts in a paddock of portents, steel blades loose upon their succulent soil. That is what you see. See them once more and see them well. An endlessness of steel blades like a suspended ceiling of restless gleams, clarified, once gone and now returned, redeemed in their solace, sheltered in their stock, in their sole way of being and no longer sobbing, testing lime upon the earth.
Steel blades for the subtraction of stubble, the cutting of leprosies, steel blades seeking to furrow the coming steppe, steel blades from the Sierra Nevada to the Sierra Maestra, the Sierra Madre that does not break. A saw that cuts tails, a saw that cuts disgrace, a mountain range that opens before the joy of the new sowing. You see the gleam of the steel blades in hand. You see it making its way through the foliage. They no longer lament, they are not cremated but burst open, steel blades that sharpen themselves, no longer shave themselves, they cling to the true face of their branch, of their sumptuous trunk, their lordly junction; they know well that from it they have taken their face and to it they shall give it back. They are steel blades under the open sky, open to the sowing, span by span, palm by palm, of an eternal and majestic palm grove.
